I've been amazed at how much technology has appeared on my travels this year. I'm in a café and once again there's over 10 laptops out on tables! Between everyone carrying mobile phones, Walkmans (usually iPods I might add), and now laptops, is it all getting a bit out of control?
I've actually gone for 5 months without a mobile phone and to be honest it hasn't been too much of a hindrance. I'll have to remember that for when I get more settled as it's very easy to get sucked into using it all the time.
Now that I don't have one, I find it really bizarre when someone else gets a text message from a friend to say they'll be 5 minutes late. Did they really need to send that message - I would've waited :)
Still though, I do find now that the laptop has been very important. While I definitely over-use it - it's now absolutely critical for getting anything done. Booking flights. Visas. Visa inquiries. Travel information. You get the idea. Most of these things done can't be taken care of now without an internet connection. So basically, I've replaced one form of communication with another :)
Hopefully, my old mobile phone company have started to realize that and start to offer decent data plans. I've had the experience of a converged service (i.e. internet access on a mobile phone) and it was fantastic.
Ironically that brings me full circle if I go for this service ever again - I'll be back to using mobile phones AND the internet. Maybe they are useful after all.....
